Dear subscribers, dear visitors of our websites, dear friends Goodbye to the Walfer Bicherdeeg 2015 that were a great success. We are pleased to have welcomed many interested people at our information booth. We hope that our new subscribers can find the necessary information on our websites. We are often asked about the difference between the 3 Luxembourgish Genealogical Associations. We try to give our response below:The Luxembourg Association of Genealogy and Heraldry (ALGH), founded on April 25th, 1984 by 45 people (including the initiator of the luxroots project), has his headquarter in Mersch. Over the years, the association has published an official information sheet, 'Familjefuerscher' and sixteen important year books. A team of volunteers has transcribed the marriages from parish registers before 1800 in a file available at the association's headquarters on the 4th floor of the Castle of Mersch. This work is currently also available in the records of parish registers published by FamilySearch. The leaders of the association have assembled a very nice library of genealogical and historical books and can be checked at their headquarter. The association is not active on the Internet. The above-mentioned teamwork inspired Georges EICHER in 1998 to develop a draft for standardized and systematic entry of details of birth / baptism, marriage and death records. The internet with its monthly subscription and the digital camera were the needed basis to start this ambitious project in 2004. Without images of records available online at this time, a first job was to take pictures of all records of a township or parish from microfilm at the National Archives or from the original at the townships. These pictures with the records of a township / parish were then delivered on CD/DVD to a luxroots-associate ready to analyze the records and to enter the details of these records in the common database of the project. It is this teamwork of volunteers as part of a non-profit project that characterizes the luxroots.com association based in Howald unlike a solitary work (search for heirs, family trees or tables on order, ..) often linked to significant financial resources. The 3rd organization, luxracines, with headquarter in Bereldange was founded in 2009, mainly by holders of genealogical websites to serve as genealogy portal to their personal websites. Like luxroots, this association organizes conferences, visits to archives and libraries. ▲ Team working in Genealogy for the future is the motto of the luxroots Genealogy group. Over 50 associates enter every day details of more than 600 records in our non-profit database. Through this volunteer work, our subscribers can advance more quickly in their genealogical research. With our myluxroots applications, they can even contribute to the common contruction of the family tree of Luxembourg. Over 240 subscribers and associates are already participating in this project by entering information about their recent family. luxroots becomes increasingly the Genealogy Center of Luxembourg. The National Archives in Luxembourg keep microfilmed documents of birth and baptism for the period ~1601 to 1923. The number of births/baptisms informed on these documents can be estimated at 1.1 million for this period. On the basis of the luxroots work done up to this day, we estimate that almost 775,000 birth certificates for the period 1798-1923 are available. Currently, we have entered the details of 707,000 birth certificates. Births of the cantons of Capellen, Clervaux, Diekirch, Echternach, Mersch, Redange, Vianden, and Wiltz and Luxembourg (99%) are entered or will be completed shortly. We plan to complete the entry of the 60,000 remaining records until mid-2016, mostly from the cantons of Esch-sur-Alzette, Grevenmacher and Remich. 8,000 births (mostly of the former townships of Eich, Hamm, Hollerich and Rollingergrund for the period 1914-1923) are currently not available and must be entered later. ▲ Our entry of baptisms (before 1798) is already well advanced. Details of baptisms of the majority of parishes situated in the northern cantons have mostly be entered (94,000). 29,000 additional baptisms were entered in other regions of Luxembourg. We estimate that the available documents hold a maximum of 320,000 baptisms,so that we still have to enter details for 197,000 records. We expect to complete this entry of baptisms in 2019. (Click on the graph for a larger view!) ▲ We just passed the gap of 100,000 marriage certificates. Generally, we can confirm that details of all marriages 1840-1923 for the cantons of Clervaux, Diekirch, Echternach, Mersch, Redange, Vianden, Wiltz and several townships of the cantons of Capellen and Luxembourg are entered. We estimate to be able to finish entering marriage certificates 1840-1923 until mid-2017. Concerning the 1797-1839 period, the marriages are entered or will be completed soon for the cantons of Clervaux, Vianden, Wiltz, Diekirch (70%) and Redange (80%). ▲ Since April 2013 until November 2015, our associate Paulette GRUN-BESCH completed the entry of the 57,829 births 1796-1923 of the city of Luxembourg. Meanwhile, other associates entered 41,000 birth certificates (-1913) of the former municipalities of Eich, Hamm, Hollerich and Rollingergrund. The most widespread names in the city of Luxembourg are: SCHMIT (663) MULLER (625) BEFFORT (431) HOFFMANN (403) MEYER (392), REUTER (379) WAGNER (365) WEBER (362) KREMER (357) THILL (346) FUNCK, MERSCH, KIEFFER, KLEIN, STEFFEN, ...
