Dear subscribers, dear visitors of our websites, dear friends

The computer, the internet and the digital camera have revolutionized genealogy over the past 15 years.
On the internet, the family researcher can now explore many genealogical databases and view online millions of copies of records. For our region, the departmental archives of France played a pioneering role in the online visualization of their records. As of 2009, Familysearch.org started with the publication of copies of records for Luxembourg, Belgium, etc. The Belgian State Archives were quick to offer visitors the most important records of parish registers.

So, without having to move, you have at your disposal from your workstation:

To find these copies, follow this link and click on the respective link in the 'Copies d'actes' box.

One of the pioneers of genealogy on computer in Luxembourg from the years 1987/88 was the initiator of the luxroots project. In 2003, the luxroots team began the standardized recording of the details of the records photographed in the municipalities, parishes and the national archives. The input was done online in the common database on our own server. The luxroots team now counts more than 60 volunteers who enter details of 600 records each day.
This allows us to confirm our leading position in Luxemburgish genealogy.

As a luxroots subscriber, you have access to
  • to the details of 1,574,000 birth/baptism, marriage and death records. These details help you enormously to decipher the writing used in the records.
  • igenealogy.lu with the genealogies of 84 family researchers totaling 241,000 people
  • roots.lu with the details of the parish registers of Luxembourg-Ville, Diekirch, Ettelbruck, Mersch and others
  • the data of 5,000 Luxembourgers, soldiers of France 1792-1815
  • the index of 13,000 notarial acts 1621-1821
  • to the myluxroots programs that allow you to manage your family research.

The first phase of the luxroots project is now finished. All the details of birth certificates available 1798-1923 (755,539) from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are now in our database. If you do not find the details of a birth certificate for this period on luxroots, you may not find it anywhere.

The second phase (Marriages 1840-1923 of the Grand Duchy) passed the 95% mark (121,370 records) and the remaining 5,300 marriages should be entered until the end of October 2017.
Details of 70% of baptismal records of the Grand Duchy before 1800 (phase 3) are in our database. This entries of baptism records are necessary for the next phase (4) since we only want to enter marriage details on the basis of the entered baptisms.
Phase 4 (Marriages GDL 1798-1839) is completed at 44%; 27,600 records of marriage remain to be entered.
Phase 5 (Marriages before 1798) began well with 21% of these records, some 59,000 remain to be entered. (End planned for 2020).
For the northern cantons, marriages (in all its phases) are almost complete with details of more than 64,000 marriages ((Clervaux: 12.858, Diekirch: 15.734, Redange: 14.951, Vianden: 4.519 and Wiltz: 15,995). No other database offers this quantity and quality of marriage details for this northern region.

Our website igenealogy.lu, where you can publish your GEDCOM file for free, now holds 84 trees with 241.700 people after updating the file of our subscriber Liliane JUNG-MEYER with 6,687 people.
How to link a death notice I found on eluxemburgensia.lu with the record of the deceased person in luxroots? See our Demo-Video. (We suggest to open the video with the Firefox Browser.)

Through the myluxroots transactions, more than 300 subscribers and associates have already entered their recent family members to luxroots linking them to the ancestors already entered earlier by our volunteers. If you add 7 family members (1924-2017) in our database, then it is possible that you get a pedigree chart with 1,000 ancestors (10 generations), and this in 10 minutes, not to mention the ability to create lists of descendants of these ancestors instantly. In Luxembourg, you will find nothing comparable to our project and for this reason, please help us to assemble the large Grand Duchy of Luxembourg genealogy puzzle and the neighboring regions. Check the pedigree charts of Christiane, Hortense, Paulette and Serge. Do the same, we will support you!

Let us build together the genealogy tree of Luxembourg! luxroots is the genealogical association in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg whose volunteers do not work on personal databases, but enter data online directly to the non-profit luxroots-database.
That's why working together makes us so powerful. If you are able to analyze records of civil registers or even of parish registers, and you want to be part of a dynamic team of volunteers as part of the cross-border and non-profit project, please contact us!
You do not need to go to townships or to archives. luxroots makes available to its associates the pictures of the records of a certain township/parish free of charge which they plan to analyze and enter the details in the luxroots-database.
Do not hesitate to participate in this great puzzle of genealogy of Luxembourg by analyzing and capturing the details of the records of your preferred township or parish. Check our inventory of records of townships/parishes
to be analyzed soon or other available documents.
